11th December    Bike Stolen

Hi Guys,

One of our members, Andre Drodz has had his Virago stolen:

Stolen from Pudsey (Yorkshire, not the bear!) on Saturday night (1st December)
1981 XV750 SE
Silver and black
Reg No: OAV 733W
The bike has a Zorstec 2 into 1 stainless steel exhaust system, apart from that it's completely original.
Speedo is in KPH with a Blue Bear conversion.
It has 2 screen mounts, but no screen.
The engine is stamped with the first 3 characters, but no numbers!
Please contact me in the first instance if you know anything of the whereabouts of this bike.

Best regards,
Mick (Yorkies Rep)

Hi all,

I have at last updated my blog.

11th October    INTERNATIONAL RALLY - FINLAND 2013 (update)

Those considering going to Finland for the International Rally next year, should now note that the venue has now changed.
This could well be down to me, as I showed some concern that there was little or no 'cabin' type accommodation at the previous
Venue, and suggested that those travelling huge distances (including the Dutch, Belgiums etc) wouldn’t wish to carry tent equipment etc etc.

It seems that they have taken my comments on board, and changed things a little. The only change in reality is that the sailing from Stockholm, will now be to Turku, as before, and not Helsinki as with the original site. The distance from Turku to the new location is 97 miles. I will arrange for those intending to go, to be collected from Turku. That does include me by the way.

Accommodation seems to be available, but this 'must' come through me. I can start generating a list should people wish to share
4 berth cabins. I do know members who are going, that will be camping, so don’t think you will be alone, should you wish to camp.

The plan is this:
Harwich-Esbjerg - Overnight Ferry - Sun 2nd June
YCCDK Clubhouse - One Night - Mon 3rd June
Granna, Sweden Cabin Accommodation - One Night - Tues 4th June
Stockholm - Turku - Overnight Ferry - Wed 5th June
Rally Site - Thursday morning to Sunday
Turku - Stockholm - Overnight Ferry - Sun 9th June
Granna Cabins - Mon 10th June
YCCDK Clubhouse - Tues 11th June & Wed 12th June
Esbjerg - Harwich - Overnight Ferry - Thurs 13th June
Arrive Harwich - Around Midday Friday 14th June

See these details as a start:-
The dates for the International Rally in Finland are as previously informed from Thursday 6th June to Sunday 9th June 2013.
Please note that the location has been changed since the last info
New location in South-West Finland, Yyteri www.topcampingyyteri.fi/en/index
Address: Yyterinsantojentie 28840, Pori, Finland.
The distance to Yyteri from Turku port is approx 160 kms (approx 97 miles).

There are cottages available (please see the descriptions for the cottages on the webpage) as well as tent places.
We shall keep you informed about the prices for the cottages, how to make reservation (one per country), rally fee etc. in the nearest future.
I would appreciate if I'll get one contact person for every country.

26th September    Jumpstart Party 2013

Hi All,

Please find attached, the flyer for Jumpstart next year. We are 'Back to Basics' in a pub but not the same one as 2 years ago. We will be 2 minutes of the motorway network so easy for everyone to get to. There are a few rooms available for those not wanting to camp in April priced at £15.00 per night not en suite and not including breakfast. These rooms will be on a first come first served basis and although tickets are being sold by Joy Mellalieu the rooms need to be booked through me please. If any of your members want a bed they MUST email me asap. The rooms cannot be for single use so I have put what rooms we have and how many beds below:

Room 1 - 3 singles
Room 2 - 2 singles
Room 3 - 2 singles
Room 6 - 2 singles and a double

Please note this is an every day pub not a hotel or restaurant so the rooms are basic and clean but not plush hence £15.00 ppnpn.

There is a also a Premier Inn about 10 minutes walk away called the Swinging Bridge (be careful as there are 2 nearby but one is at least 20 minutes walk and they refer to them as North and South).

Please note Bob and I are on holiday for the 1st two weeks of October so any emails I will not respond to straight away but will deal with on my return.

Thanks and hope to see some of you there.

9th September    INTERNATIONAL RALLY - FINLAND 2013

Some news on next year’s International Rally in Finland has found their way to us now. The dates suggest a Thursday to Sunday Rally (3 nights) but I now understand it’s a '2 nighter'.

The cost of Rally Ticket is 55 Euro’s (£45) which includes 2 Dinners & 2 Breakfasts.

The venue is: Rantatie 5, Hollola, Finland, and looks like it’s on a lake, not literally! The flyer suggests a boat ride across the lake is planned, and that the site has a beach and the usual sauna for those daring enough to get in naked!!! Their rules, not mine!

There are cabins available that can accommodate between 4 and 8 people. There will be an extra charge for these, and I need to understand how many cabins will be allocated to us (VSOC). There is room for up to 500 tents, so no problems with camping if you so wish. The advantage of having a cabin, is that you will probably not need to take a tent. That depends of course on stop-overs en route etc.

There will be 2 overnight ferry crossings (Harwich-Esbjerg & Stockholm-Helsinki) involved. Looking at the map, Helsinki is where we will be sailing into, as the site is around 68 miles from the port. I will look to arrange that we are picked up and taken to site, which should take around an hour & a half.

Further Details:-
Provisional Info at this early stage, as DFDS will need to confirm ferry crossing dates for 2013
This will be the 'main group' option I would expect.

Harwich-Esbjerg Overnight Ferry (DFDS) - Sunday 2nd June
YCC DK Clubhouse - Monday 3rd June
Cabins in Granna, Sweden - Tuesday 4th June
Stockholm-Helsinki Overnight Ferry (Viking Line) - Wednesday 5th June

Ride to Rally Site on Thursday 6th June
Rally site from Thursday lunchtime until Sunday mid afternoon
Leave Sunday and ride to Helsinki for overnight ferry

Helsinki-Stockholm Ferry - Sunday 9th June
Granna Cabins - Monday 10th June
YCC DK Clubhouse - Tuesday 11th June & Wed 12th June
Esbjerg-Harwich Ferry - Thursday 13th June
Friday 14th June - Back in the UK

Mileages
Esbjerg-YCC DK Clubhouse - 200 miles
YCC DK Clubhouse - Granna Sweden - 203 miles (plus 20 min ferry)
Granna - Stockholm Direct - 180 miles
Helsinki - Rally Site, Finland - 68 miles

Currencies - Danish Kroner, Swedish Kronor, Euro’s

16th August    News from Sam Manicom

Adventure Motorcycle Travel Books by Sam Manicom

Hi everyone. So what's going on? First of all, I'm delighted to have the chance to tell you that the completely unabridged version of Into Africa has just been released as an Audio Book. And unlike many of the CD versions of audio books, this is the full story!

Over the past year I’ve had regular requests to do this and when I realised that hardly any adventure motorcycle travel books have been released in audio book format, I thought it would be fun to have a go. It really has been too. A real voyage of discovery.

In the sound boothSome of you may remember that we posted sample excerpts from the first chapter on YouTube last year. These excerpts were posted for a couple of reasons. Firstly would there be any real interest? And was I the really the right person to narrate the book?

The feedback from the YouTube sample has been great. I hope you agree. These are just two of the emails:

‘I’ve read Into Africa and wondered what it would be like as an audio book. Listening to your excerpts made me feel as if I was there with you in the pub listening to you tell tales of the road, but better still, you almost had me smelling the smells and feeling the heat. I could also hear the fear in your voice, as well as the wonder. I hope you do go ahead and make it into a talking book.’

‘Loved the excerpts Sam. I’ll buy a copy if you ever make it into an audio book. But it’ll not be just for me. My Dad has ridden bikes since he was a teenager but his eyesight isn’t good enough to read anymore. I know he’d really enjoy listening to your adventures.’

Who have the other requests come from? I’ve had face-to-face comments and emails from people who commute to work by car, travel on caravan holidays, from motorcyclists who are set up to listen as they ride and from people who just love the idea of listening to a book rather than read it. And I’ve had a significant number of requests from two other groups of people. Blind people relish an adventure too, and what about those people who have the constant challenge of dyslexia? Into Africa the Audio Book is for all of you. I hope you enjoy.

Roger in the Kite StudioOne of the fun things about this whole project has been the learning curve and also  the chance to spend time with people who have real talent. The Kite Recording Studio in Cambridge has taken me through the whole process and they’ve been great fun to work with.

We really wanted to add music into the book. After all, if we were going to have a go at a new project then we were going to make it the best we could. Al Marconi, Erwin Keiles and friends, plus Two Camels Music have all very kindly allowed us to use their music to go with the chapters. Some of the music was recorded live in African villages as the villagers sat jamming, drinking beer and making each other laugh. Africa is a fun place to travel; in a major part because of the people.

I hope you’ll enjoy listening to Into Africa. It gives you the chance to escape onto the roads of this amazing continent for nearly 11 hours.

You can buy the audio book here

If you are tempted, but need a little more information, well, just have a look to see what readers have very kindly been saying about the paperback version.

Into Africa Audio BookIt would be a huge help if you’d pass my news to your friends and mates on forums and the like. Thanks in advance for that!

And (I can’t believe I’m about to write this but…) it’s now not so long until Christmas so perhaps this would be the ideal gift to give? Good grief! How commercial was that?!

The Into Africa audio book is distributed by Open Book Audio. ISBN: 978-0-9556573-5-1

I hope you all have had brilliant adventures this Summer, and that the sun stays with us all through the Autumn.

All the best,
Sam

The next news? We really have been having fun with 'Into Africa'. After all, it is the first book in the series and the full-on adventures are just the start of the unintentional 8-year journey around the world.

But the news is that you can now download it as an enhanced e-book     from  i-Tunes. This version has maps, colour photos (many of which haven’t been seen in public before) and video excerpts with yours truly having a natter about life, the road and everything.

And there’s more news! Just in case you haven’t discovered them yet, all four of the books are available for the Kindle.  I’m amazed at how well they are going; e-books seem to be increasingly popular. The advantages aren't hard to see.

And finally? A watershed has been reached!

What brilliant Summer this has been. I’m now 2 years down the line from my amazing kidney transplant and the docs have said that at last Birgit and I can ride our bikes outside of the UK for the first time! Fantastic! In just a couple of weeks we’ll be starting a month riding through Spain and France. Now to start to discover lands closer to home. If things smell different, taste different and sound different, then an adventure is on the roll...

Have you signed up to be an organ donor yet? This is the UK link. And for Canada. And this for the USA.  Australia, and there are more opportunities to sign up all over Europe. Wherever you live, there's a set up near you...

The idea of my Info Mail is to let you know when things are happening with my books, and as before, I’m keen not to overload you with them. They’ll only be coming out on unusual occasions. If you are getting deluged by newsletters and don’t want them from me, please just click 'Unsubscribe'. I do understand, but of course hope you won’t zap that button.

8th August    Single Wheel Bike Trailer - £2,250

All,

I finally found this manufacture who has his business 2 miles from me, of this Mono-Trail trailer and visited it today and I was very impressed with the product, it's definitely in the BMW/Mercedes league re design, style, build, practicality and finish......even I want one.

Eric, the designer and owner of this product business, has been making them for a number of years and each one is built/finished to fit and match the clients bike. He does not have units sitting on the shelf as he has to design/make the coupling to fit the bike and he also gets them sprayed in the matching bike colour. This is a very well made product and for the price of £2,250 inclusive, I think it's worth it.

..and because it has one wheel which allows for a slim trailer width, it's easy to filter through traffic without worrying that you might clout a vehicle.

Eric explained to me how it's made and why it has certain design features and he uses top quality components re suspension, wheel, lighting, electrics, bike mounts.

If you want one, you have to be prepared to leave your bike with him for one whole day so that he can work out the best coupling design for your bike and colour match your bike paint finish. If necessary, he has arranged for the local pub in the village to put you up for the night (at your cost).

Contact Eric direct if you want to place an order or ask questions:- [email protected] or Tel: 01379 898535

I took 2 videos while I was there and I've posted them on YouTube:-

The Trailer video can be seen here:- http://youtu.be/8M0SPzh9nFg

The Chassis video can be seen here:- http://youtu.be/Vw8PgdlnreE

I've also asked him if he'd like to bring a trailer to my pavolva party this coming 18th so C10 members attending such can see it. I've yet to get his answer on this.

28th May    Kevin Hoyte - Honorary Member of YCC DK

As some of you may know Kevin has been travelling to Denmark for many years mainly as part of a VSOC contingent to an event in that part of the world.

He has also attended many other functions at the Yamaha Custom Club (Denmark) club house during the 15 year bond/friendship between the 2 clubs.

Jan Janell who runs the YCCDK felt that Kevin had been paramount in forging the very good relations we have with his club and following on from his own Honorary membership of the VSOC a few years previously made a decision that a lifetime Honorary membership would be awarded to him.

The presentation and speeches were made after the Danish International in 2011 at the club house and a certificate and ‘ patch ‘ were presented.

I could tell by the look on Kev’s face that this was completely out of the blue as he accepted the certificate and club ‘ patch ‘ which is only available to members, unlike YCC patches from other countries which can be purchased.

Kevin is the only UK member to have received this honour and I am sure is very proud of this achievement.

Vice Chairman

19th April    Will English - Back from Gambia

Well I have been back a few weeks now, though I did have quite a scare on my return. It was thought that I may have picked up Malaria, however the blood tests have proven negative!

I just wanted to thank all those who helped me both with donations and moral support during my 3,500 mile trip to Bansang Hospital to deliver 12 Honda C90's.

The trip was a Journey of discovery! As our average speed was 45 MPH our daily ride was often over 12 hours long. My bottom is still in recovery mode!

I am now busy preparing for my round the world trip, the start date has now slipped a few days to May 5th due to visa issues.

I am also writing a piece for the clatter but with over 1,000 pictures to choose from the difficulty is deciding which ones to publish!

Once again thanks to all who have supported me.

3rd March    Grand Dinner Dance 2013

Hi all,

Please find our flyer for the 2013 grand dinner / dance in Harrogate, this time I have had long talks with the Cairn Hotel and they have given us all the rooms above the ballroom and lower floors and as such the VSOC will have the majority of hotel to ourselves.

Could you please pass this flyer on to your members and ask for those wishing to attend either for the Saturday or as a lot did this year stay for the weekend, a deposit of £20 per person is required together with the names in the party.

A draw is made at the end of the year from all the names and a lucky couple will be given a free upgrade to the honeymoon suite, also the hotel will once again give us £100 and someone on the night will be £100 richer.

We are in the process of looking at the entertainment and will have some new ideas for the Saturday night.

We have negotiated special drink offers again, as at last they realise that cheaper drinks means more takings.

On the Saturday members will get their room / a 4 course meal served in the ballroom / the entertainment / and an all you can eat breakfast in the morning.

We have a limit on the numbers of 170 people and you can be sure these places will go quickly.

Many thanks for your time, if you need more info please mail me.

Regards,

Terry Lewis

6th February    Janet Butterworth's New Stryker

Just thought I would send you a pic of me and my Stryker. It is the only one in the UK and we imported it at the end of last year. We didn’t go through a dealer, Steve did it all himself. He got himself a Raider as well.

He has lowered the bike for me and I have only done 73 miles so far as it is not a good time of year to get a new bike.

Thought the members would be interested in it and if they need any advice or guidance on how to import one for themselves, they can contact Steve on [email protected]

The first picture is the stock bike before being loaded to the crate in California. The second one was taken on Sunday after a very cold ride.

Janet Butterworth

29th January    What to take with you when driving in France

Top Tips: Driving in France

France is just a short hop over the English Channel but for some, driving in an unknown environment can be a daunting task.

It is important to remember that for the most part it’s just like driving in the UK. The main difference is that in France, you drive on the right hand side of the road and overtake on the left. Just take things slowly at first and make sure you use your mirrors - having experienced driving in busy traffic in the UK, you’ll be sure to pick it up in no time.

Upon arrival at Dunkirk port you will soon realise that all the motorways you need and areas you want to visit are clearly signposted. France and the rest of Europe are literally just hours away with DFDS Seaways.

To put your mind at ease, we have put together a list of useful things to remember when driving in France:

What should you take with you?

Documentation:
If driving in France you should be prepared to provide the following documents:

  • Full, valid driving license (with paper counterpart if you have a photocard license)

  • Original vehicle registration document

  • Motor insurance certificate

  • Passport

  • International Driving Permit (if necessary)

Equipment:

Motorists in France are required by law to have access to specific items when driving. Be prepared and ensure you have the following:

  • Warning triangle (this excludes motorcycles)

  • Reflective jackets

  • Headlamp Adaptors (available in our onboard shop)

  • GB sticker (UK registered vehicles displaying Euro-plates (circle of 12 stars above the national identifier on blue background) do not need a GB sticker)

  • Headlamp adjustment for driving on the right

  • Disposable breathalyser kits

  • Spare bulb kit

  • Snow chains (for vehicles using snow-covered roads – see relevant road signs).

Driving regulations (France)

Driving license

  • Car: minimum age of 18

  • 80cc motorcycle: minimum age 16

  • 80cc+ motorcycle: minimum age 18.

Drinking alcohol:

Our advice: if you drive, don’t drink alcohol.

Motorists must have no more than 0.05 per cent or more (0.02% for bus/coach drivers) of alcohol in their bloodstream. Saliva drug tests may be used to determine if alcohol has been consumed and penalties include fines, imprisonment and/or confiscation of license.

Seat belts:
Passengers in the front and rear seats must wear seat belts.

Children:
It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure all passengers under 18 are appropriately restrained.

Children under the age of 10 must not travel on the front seats of vehicles, unless there are no rear seats or the rear seats are already occupied with children under 10 or there are no seat belts. In this situation, babies (under13kg) must be carried in a rear facing baby seat.

Speed:
The following national speed limits apply:

  • Built-up areas: 31 mph (50 km/h)

  • Outside built-up areas: 55 mph (90 km/h)

  • Urban motorways and dual carriageways separated by a central reservation: 68 mph (110 km/h)

  • Motorways: 80 mph (130 km/h)

Holders of EU driving licenses exceeding the speed limit by more than 40 km/h will have their licenses confiscated on the spot by the police.

Disabled parking access:
Parking discs for ‘blue zone’ parking areas can be obtained from police stations, tourist offices and some shops.

(the above is an article originally on the following website www.dfdsseaways.co.uk/ferry-routes/ferry-to-france/driving-tips/)

11th January    Will's off to Gambia (Pt. 2)

Hi all,

Just thought I would give you an update to my Gambia trip.

Thanks to the 2 Centres that have donated to a very worth cause.

I now have a C90 which I purchased for £550, which on arrival at the Bansang Hospital will be handed over to be used as doctors/nurse vehicle.

5th January    Yorkies News

Hi and welcome.

Following the Yorkies AGM on 3rd January 2012 I am now introducing myself as the new Yorkies Rep.

I must express great thanks to the outgoing Rep, the one and only Terry Lewis! As I was Deputy Rep for the last two years and Terry mentioned that he would be standing down in 2012, I was formally asked if I’d like to take the position of Rep. I thought that this was a natural follow on from being Deputy Rep and I had no hesitation in accepting the proposal.

Terry very kindly took me under his wing and gave me more duties within the club and also let me `chair` parts of our meetings, thus giving me a taste of what I would be up for in the future.

After the AGM, I presented Terry with a black glass plaque for his outstanding contribution to the Yorkies, during his time as Rep.
The plaque was inscribed with the words;

Terry lewis
Yorkies Rep 2006 – 2012
For Outstanding commitment,
Support and enthusiasm
As Yorkies Rep.
Thank you
From all the Yorkies.

Sandie presented Sue with a crystal flower vase,
which was inscribed with the words;

To Sue
Behind every great man, is a great woman.
Thank you
From all the Yorkies

Terry is staying on the committee as Yorkies Deputy Rep and as always, Sue will be by his side!

Many thanks to Sandie, who has been of great support and her ability to steer me in the right direction when I get into a mess with this damned laptop!

To end, I’d like to thank everyone for their unanimous support of me at the Yorkies AGM and I hope I can return the favour by `doing you proud` in this important role in our club!

I think most of you Rep's will already know me but for those that don't, I'm the Yorkie with the red Mohawk hairstyle and the gold teeth!

Best regards
