A Yorkie Hearing Dog is for life,
not just for Christmas.
By Bev Henderson – Centre 5 Treasurer & Secretary
I am writing with great pride to tell the club about the wonderful fund raising that The Yorkies have achieved over the last ten months on behalf of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. Last April the Centre 5 committee decided that we would adopt the charity for the remaining part of the year and ideas of how to raise funds started to flood in almost immediately. The Centre visited the training centre just outside Selby on a Sunday ride-out and everyone was excited to start to try and achieve the £2,500 target needed to train a dog to be placed with recipient. The charity has been running for just 20 years and has placed 819 dogs with profoundly or severely deaf people and we expressed a wish that the dog that we were to sponsor would go to a person in the Yorkshire region.
The fund raising got into full swing as the summer progressed with nearly half of this large centre membership being involved in and supporting an event. We had people shaving heads & beards, sponsored walks & bike rides, tattoo raffles, famines & cake stalls, collection boxes and many more. I would like to thank once again everyone who contributed throughout the year as the final total that was achieved is astonishing…
…At our recent Christmas party we had great pleasure in presenting a cheque to Jan from the Hearing Dogs training centre for the grand total of £4,633.00!!! She was so pleased to accept the donation and emphasised the importance of the donation and the difference that a Hearing Dog can make to the life of a deaf person.
Well done everyone
